The Laurel Garden Club was chartered in Highlands, NC on August 30, 1982, with 26 members.  Currently the Club has an active membership of 53.  The purpose of the Laurel Garden Club is to aid the protection and conservation of our natural resources, encourage civic beauty and roadside beautification, stimulate the fine art of gardening and enable cooperation with other organizations furthering the interest of horticulture and conservation.

In 2002, the Club published the award winning cookbook, "Celebrate Highlands" to raise funds in support of its stated purpose.  To date 8,000 cookbooks have been sold, raising in excess of $50,000.  The Club has been pleased to give these proceeds, through its formal grant program, in support of the following organizations and more:  Highlands Botanical Gardens/Nature Center, Highlands Historical Society, Highlands Performing Arts Center, Highlands Land Trust, Fidelia Eckerd Living Center and Highlands Community Child Development Center.

The Laurel Garden Club is undertaking a new fundraising project to replenish its grant monies so that the Club can continue its level of significant giving to worthy organizations and projects in the Highlands area.  On September 24, 2011, the Club conducted its first Bi-Annual Tour of Kitchens, featuring seven Highlands kitchens, ranging from fabulous mansions to rustic cottages, plus peeks into some of the homes and gardens.  The next Kitchen Tour is coming August 19, 2017 and promises to be another exciting success!
